Why is Masters Par 3 Contest played?

The original idea for a Par 3 contest was the brainchild of late Augusta National Chairman Cliff Roberts, who conceived of it as a distinct, pre-tournament attraction at Augusta. Family members traditionally serve as caddies for the participants, and the event is meant to serve as a minor stress reliever in the midst of tournament week.

Sam Snead won the inaugural Par 3 contest in 1960 after scoring a 23, and the tournament has been held every year except 2017, 2020 and 2021.

Has a Par 3 champion ever won Masters?

Perhaps it's bad luck, but no Masters Par 3 champion has ever gone on to win the Masters Tournament in the same year. Of the Par 3 contest champions who played the full tournament, 22 missed the cut in their respective tournament, 17 finished lower than 20th place and 10 placed outside of the top 10.

The two Par 3 champions who came closest to winning the Masters were Ray Floyd and Chip Beck, who finished as runners-up in 1990 and 1993, respectively.
