How to Make Bourbon Chicken in a Slow Cooker

UPDATED with a video from Mikey.

When I say I was on a hunt for a recipe, I mean I was on a HUNT! Of course, I started with my favorite Gooseberry Patch Cookbooks. I didn’t find Bourbon Chicken, but I did find Kentucky Wildcat Chicken in What’s For Dinner?. It looked pretty yummy, but not exactly what I had in mind…although, I do think I will be seeing if I can figure out how to convert it to a crock pot recipe!

Then I looked online and did a little research. It seems there is a little bit of a feud over how this dear chicken recipe got its name. Some say it is because it was created by a chef on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. Others say it has its origins in Kentucky, the state with all the bourbon. Regardless, bourbon isn’t a drink of choice in this family, so I opted to use chicken broth. If this highly offends you or you just have bourbon in the house, feel free to use bourbon instead of chicken broth.

So just where did I find this recipe? I didn’t. I wanted to make it right. then. So I took a little bit of creative license on this one and gave it a try! Now, I know that can be dangerous at times, but this time it wasawesome!I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out and the hubs and Ryder agreed!

I haven’t tried cooking this recipe on high but think it might work. The timing will depend on how hot your crock pot cooks, so watch it closely the first time you make so you can adjust the cooking time as needed. If you give it a try, let me know how it goes.

I only have one problem with my first time making this Bourbon Chicken. That I did not double the recipe. It was very, very good but between three people it did not go far enough. That’s ok as I printed off the recipe and will be making it again very soon. I look forward to trying some of your other crock recipes

1 tbsp of water to 1 tbsp of corn starch
remove chicken from crock pot, put it off to the side. Place sauce in crockpot to a pan for reduction process, once water/corn starch mixture combined add to pan. Cook on high until thickens but doesn’t char the sauce mixture. Hope this helps!

FAQs

Is it OK to cook raw chicken in a crock pot? ›

Yes, you can put raw chicken in a slow cooker! Slow cookers and Crock-Pots are designed to cook raw meats. The direct heat from the pot, lengthy cooking time and steam created from the tightly covered container destroys bacteria, making slow cooking safe. You can put frozen chicken in a slow cooker, too!

Does cooking chicken in the crockpot longer make it more tender? ›

Slow cooking uses moist heat. The slow cooker is best for meats that have a lot of connective tissue and that are very tough (and typically fairly inexpensive). The connective tissue is turned to gelatin after slow cooking in moist heat for several hours. That is why tough meats become “fork tender” in the slow cooker.

Is it better to cook chicken in the crock pot on high or low? ›

Low and High settings on most crock pots only determine the amount of time it takes for the crock to reach maximum temperature. The safe temperature for chicken is 165°F. Low and slow typically results in better flavors.

How do you cook chicken in a crock pot so it doesn't dry out? ›

Adding some liquid to the slow cooker is an essential step, and ensures that the chicken is tender and juicy.

Do you need to add liquid to crock pot when cooking chicken? ›

Using a nice, long, low-and-slow cook time helps chicken breasts retain plenty of moisture - but you can certainly opt to add a splash of water or chicken stock to the crockpot if you like! If you're worried about dry chicken, you can also swap boneless skinless chicken thighs in for a bit of extra moisture.

Why does chicken get rubbery in slow cooker? ›

In addition, chicken breast has less fat and can become dry (chewy or rubbery) if cooked for too long. Without moisture, the protein fibers in the chicken become elastic.

Why is my chicken rubbery after crockpot? ›

Chicken becomes rubbery/chewy when it's overcooked. So in general, including in a slow cooker, don't cook as long. There are lots of recipes online, they can give you a good place to start.

How long is too long for chicken in crockpot? ›

However, there is a limit to how long you can cook chicken in a slow cooker. After 10 hours, the chicken will start to dry out and become tough. If you want to cook chicken in a slow cooker for 10 hours, it's best to use a recipe that calls for chicken breasts or thighs.

Is 4 hours on high the same as 8 hours on low? ›

The difference between "High" and "Low" on slow cookers seems to differ with every brand and model. One thing that is consistent, though, is that food takes seven to eight hours to reach a simmer point (around 210°) on low; versus three to four hours on high.

How long can you leave chicken in a CrockPot on low? ›

Cover your crock pot and cook chicken breasts on low for 6-7 hours or on high for 3-4 hours. Chicken is done when the internal temp reaches 165 degrees F. Use chicken in your favorite recipes. Perfect for shredding!

Should I flip chicken in slow cooker? ›

Should you flip the chicken in the slow cooker? No, all you need to do is add all the ingredients into the slow cooker, cover and cook. Chicken is such a delicious, versatile and healthy option and there are a variety of ways to cook it.

How do you keep chicken moist in a crock pot? ›

Pour in a liquid, such as chicken broth, wine, or tomato sauce, to add moisture and flavor. Cook on low heat for 4 to 6 hours or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F. Shred or chop the chicken before serving to ensure it is fully infused with the flavors from the cooking liquid.

Can you overcook chicken in a crock pot? ›

Can you overcook chicken in the slow cooker? Yes, it is possible! If the meat is cooked too long it could end up dry and not juicy and tender. The recommended times in my recipe are ideal for juicy results, but if you use less chicken than the recipe calls for I would recommend checking it sooner.

Can you slow cook chicken for 8 hours? ›

Remove chicken from the bag and cook in a slow cooker on Low until no longer pink at the bone and the juices run clear, 4 to 8 hours.

How long can raw chicken sit in crock-pot before cooking? ›

Raw chicken can be safely stored in a crockpot for up to 2 hours before cooking. After 2 hours, the chicken will start to enter the "Danger Zone" where bacteria can grow rapidly and cause foodborne illness. The "Danger Zone" is between 40°F and 140°F.

Is it necessary to brown chicken before slow cooking? ›
