Overview

The Range Rover is Land Rover's flagship SUV and it's all-new for the 2023 model year. Everything has been redesigned; even the engines are new. The modernistic restyle is both elegant and sophisticated. The new design pushes boundaries and is completely up to date, but it's still classic Range Rover. The new interior is even more sumptuous than before. The Range Rover has been the most off-road-capable luxury SUV, and all that great rugged hardware is still present, including an updated air suspension and all-wheel drive. The Range Rover has 8.6-inches of ground clearance and 11.6 inches with the Off-Road package. It can ford 35.4 inches of water, much more than the Mercedes Benz GLS or BMW X7. Buyers can choose from three new engines, including a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 sourced from BMW. Also used in vehicles such as the BMW M550i, it's a spectacular engine, smooth and refined while pumping out more than 500 horsepower. There's also a plug-in hybrid powertrain that can be driven 48 miles on EV power alone.

Considerations

New 523-horsepower twin-turbo V8 isn't as powerful as last year's 575-hp supercharged V8.

Verdict

All new, the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover remains the pinnacle of luxury SUVs.

What's New for2023

This year the Land Rover Range Rover is all new.

Trims and Pricing

The 2023 Land Rover Range Rover is offered in four trim levels: SE, Autobiography, First Edition, and SV. A longer wheelbase is available on the Autobiography, First Edition, and SV. A long wheelbase with a third-row seat is available on the SE and Autobiography. The Autobiography is the popular model, but we recommend the SE. We'll explain why.

SE

The Range Rover SE costs $102,350 (including a $1,350 destination fee) and is the best overall value in the lineup. Standard features include an adaptive air suspension, all-wheel drive, all-wheel steering, an active rear differential, 21-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sliding moonroof, a power-operated liftgate, perforated leather upholstery, 20-way power-adjustable heated front seats, three-zone climate control, a 13.1-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Meridian premium audio system, and a configurable digital gauge cluster. Under the hood is a 395-horsepower 3.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged mild-hybrid inline-6. A 523-hp 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 is optional. An Advanced Off-Road Capability Pack is available.

Autobiography

The Autobiography ($153,800) adds a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, 22-inch wheels, black brake calipers, pixel LED headlights, ventilated front seats, upgraded leather, four-zone climate control, a head-up display, a center console refrigerator, and a rear-seat entertainment system.

First Edition

The First Edition costs $160,000. Standard features include 23-inch wheels, heated and cooled 24-way power-adjustable, hot stone massage front seats, Executive Class Comfort Plus rear seats, illuminated aluminum tread plates with First Edition script, an auto-folding cargo cover, and leather tailgate-event seats.

SV

The SV ($188,200) features 22-inch diamond turned wheels with glossy dark gray contrast, metal-plated exterior accents, exclusive front bumper and grille design, SV white ceramic exterior badge with black SV roundel, bright metal pedals, and gloss-white ceramic controls.

Engine and Performance

The Range Rover is available with three different engines, all with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The SE model is powered by a 395-horsepower 3.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged mild-hybrid inline-6. A twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine supplied by BMW is standard on the Autobiography, First Edition, and SV, and available on the SE. It makes 523 hp, which is considerably less than the supercharged 575-hp V8 it replaced.

The inline-6 gets the SUV to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds and the V8 drops that time to 4.4 seconds. The Range Rover is also available as a plug-in hybrid with 434 hp and 48 miles of driving range on electric power alone. It hits 60 mph in 5.9 seconds. The hybrid powertrain combines a 3.0-liter inline-6 with a battery pack and an electric motor. The batteries can be charged to 80% in less than an hour.

Fuel Economy

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) hasn't released estimated fuel economy for the 2023 Range Rover. Last year's model had different engines, but it's worth noting that the Range Rover fuel mileage has always been near the top of its class. The 2022 model was rated 18 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway with the base engine. With the burly V8 engine those numbers dipped to 16/21 mpg city/highway. With the even more powerful supercharged V8 it was rated 14/19 mpg city/highway. That's better fuel efficiency than the Lincoln Navigator and Cadillac Escalade. The BMW X7 is rated 19/24 mpg city/highway, and the Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 is rated 20/24 mpg.

Interior

The 2023 Range Rover interior is beautifully finished, elegant, and packed with tech including a massive touchscreen and digital gauges. The leather is sumptuous and the available wood trims are beautiful. Spacious five-passenger seating is standard. The long-wheelbase models have about the same amount of rear seat legroom as a full-size pickup. Second-row captain's chairs are available, and for the first time a third-row seat is offered.

The Range Rover has 40.7 cubic feet of luggage space behind the second row. With the second-row seats folded down, the SUV provides 83.4 cubic feet of space. Those numbers increase to 40.9 cubic feet and 92.8 cubic feet for the long-wheelbase models. Add the available third row and there's 8.7 cubic feet behind it and 43.1 cubic feet when it's folded flat. Those are competitive numbers for this class. The Mercedes-Benz GLS has a maximum of 84.7 cubic feet and the BMW X7 has a maximum of 90.4 cubic feet. The larger Lincoln Navigator and Cadillac Escalade have more space.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The 2023 Range Rover features the latest version of the brand's Pivi Pro infotainment technology and its largest touchscreen ever. The 13.1-inch curved, floating screen features all-new graphics and works in harmony with the SUV's new semi-floating 13.7-inch configurable digital gauge cluster. For the first time in a Land Rover, the touchscreen provides haptic feedback, giving tactile confirmation of your selections and letting you keep your eyes on the road. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard along with built-in Amazon Alexa, navigation, and a wireless phone charger. A 1,600-watt Meridian Signature Sound System is standard on Autobiography and First Edition models. It features 35 speakers, including 20-watt speakers in the four main headrests for an immersive sound experience. A new optional rear-seat entertainment system has adjustable 11.4-inch HD touchscreens mounted on the rear of the front seatbacks.

Safety

The 2023 Land Rover Range Rover has not yet been rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The Range Rover offers a long list of available active safety and driver-assist features, including parking sensors, lane-departure assist, automatic emergency braking, and cruise control with a speed limiter. Rear cross-traffic monitor, traffic sign recognition, and blind-spot warning are also available.

Land Rover Range Rover vs. theCompetition

When most people think of the ultimate luxury SUV, they think of the Range Rover. It basically invented the genre. It was the first vehicle that combined the elegance, comfort, and features of a luxury SUV with serious off-road capability. The all-new 2023 Range Rover continues that legacy. It's still the most off-road capable in its class. It's also powerful, luxurious, and more opulent than ever. Plus, for the first time, it's available with a third-row seat like the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS. It's considerably more expensive than its rivals, but the all-new Range Rover has enhanced its overall excellence in many ways.
